AES GOT MILK? Campaign...in the making

Lots of children are throwing away unopened cartons of milk in the AES lunchroom. The students came up with ideas of what could be the problem. Their ideas were very interesting. The students researched facts about milk and decided they should do something to bring attention to the other students of why drinking milk is so important. I split the students into groups and each group chose what they wanted to do: play, movie, song, game, etc. Most groups have chosen a play, movie, or song. So, now we are in the process of making these productions come to life...which is a lot of hard work. Take a look at the pictures of our fun!

Katy Grace is helping pin Grayce's costume on.

John and Maddox are having a little trouble getting Rayna's costume fixed. But...believe it or not....these boys problem-solving skills helped them turn this into something great.

John is the prop manager of this groups movie.

John and Elijah are making a glass of water from cardboard and pom-poms.

Lauren and Hannah are wanting kids to vote on what would help them drink more milk, so they designed a vote box to sit outside the classroom.

These cuties are painting Britton's milk carton costume.

This group is also designing a milk carton from cardboard.

Eli and Wesley are working on costumes for their play. Wesley will be a bale of hay on the farm.

Cooper is trying out his robot costume for his group's milk song.

These ladies are painting the a car for their movie.

The milk carton painting is still under-raps.

Wesley is helping paint the barn.

These lovely ladies are brainstorming on how to build and paint their costumes.

Painting is so messy, but soooooo much fun!

DAY OF PLAY!

The Global Cardboard Challenge was a huge success! The 3rd grade G.A.T.E. students did an amazing job designing and creating their own cardboard games. Some of the G.A.T.E. classes even created a presentation of their game to share with the 4th grade G.A.T.E. students. They had to write and memorize their part of the presentation and it turned out awesome! The 4th grade G.A.T.E. students came to our classroom and played our games and we went to their room and played their games in our “Day of Play!” Mrs. Sheets even joined in on the fun and was very impressed by the students’ originality and creativity.

After our “Day of Play,” the students came up with a door design for Red Ribbon Week: “Keeps Your Eyes Off Drugs!” The students created their own eye using black paper and pastels. These turned out really cool!

At the end of the week, the students wrote their own, “Stories with Holes.” “Stories with Holes” is a book full of riddles to encourage students to think outside of the box. Each student read their riddles in front of the class and let us figure out what the hole in the story was. Some of the students’ riddles were so difficult we couldn’t even figure them out and even had to forfeit! This was so much fun!

Global Cardboard Challenge

What a productive week in G.A.T.E.! The students have finished their cardboard games and THEY ARE AWESOME! These students are so creative and have such awesome ideas! It’s also neat to see the “builders” of the groups and watch them construct the cardboard and bring the games to life. Next week, the 4th grade G.A.T.E. students will come to our classroom and play our games and we will go to their classroom and play theirs. This will be a great time to showcase our games!

Global Cardboard Challenge: Under Construction

This week in GATE the students watched Caine’s Arcade and decided to take the GLOBAL CARDBOARD CHALLENGE! The students formed groups and designed their own arcade games on paper. Now, they are making their arcade games come to life using cardboard and a few other materials. They will finish their games next week and start playing the games. I can’t wait to see the final products.

Be sure to watch Caine’s Arcade on YouTube and see where everything started.

Celebrating Our Differences

The first week of G.A.T.E. classes are coming to a close. We had a very productive week. Each class learned about celebrating our differences by sculpting one item from Play Dough that represented them best. We then took a piece of each sculpture and rolled them together to create a special sculpture showing that by working together we are one class that can accomplish many things together through our similarities and differences. Our class differences are now on display to see and remember throughout the school year.

G.A.T.E. students also created their own “I AM…” self-portraits. Every student drew and colored a picture of themselves and then described them by cutting out single words from magazines that fit with “I AM…”

G.A.T.E. students took an interest survey called “If I Ran the School.” This survey had the students to list only 10 things they would want to be taught if they were the boss and ran the school. It was neat to see everyone’s answers and once again, we got to see our similarities and differences.

WE HAVE AN INSTAGRAM NOW!!! Don't forget to follow us at aesgate3

The end result of our "Celebrating Our Differences" Play Dough Activity. We proudly have this hanging on the wall to remind us.
